Armless Chairs
ARMLESS CHAIRS
Everyone knows what a chair is, a piece of furniture used by people to sit on. It is a raised surface properly designed for comfort. They come in various designs and versions. The armless chairs are one of the designs. Armless chairs derive their name category out of the fact that they lack provisions for the arms to rest when someone is seated.
Historical Significance
Armless chairs like all other chairs in general are made of materials ranging form wood, metal and plastic among others. They have been used since time immemorial by our ancestors in all cultures around the world. It can actually be argued that these armless versions preceded their armrest fitted counterparts by their existence in rudimentary forms in ancient civilizations. They were then used as symbols of authority as well as implements of comfort as is today though with modifications.
Type of Armless Chairs
There are today many versions and types of armless chairs used in different ways in different situations. They range from stools, high chairs, recliners, seats, dining chairs as well as office chairs. They derive their references from the purpose they are used for or their designs.
Armless chairs may or may not have a fitted back as exemplified by a kitchen stool contrasted with a dining chair. They may also have a head rest though most of them do not have this provision.
The design
Most of the considerations made when designing armless chairs or determining its preference from the other types is usually anthropometric. They are so made bearing in mind their intended area of use or the persons to use them. In the office for example armless chairs provide the arms with the ease of mobility to reach out and attend to various tasks like answering the phones and typing space management. It may also be argued that the arms are usually busy therefore no need for armrests.
Armless chairs provide no difficulty in entry or exit from the chair and this provides the logic behind the kitchen stool. In case of any emergency, one is capable of jumping out faster than it would have been if the chair had obstacles such as the armrests.
Space value
In the modern world where there is more and more competition for space, and the dictates of urbanization where houses have become smaller and smaller in size, armless chairs have com as a remedy. In a small house with competition with other house furniture and appliances, armless chairs give an illusion of space. It is behind this notion that these chairs have become very popular and have withstood the test of time against the encroachment of aesthetic considerations of makers as well as the interior designers.
Armless chairs therefore appear in diverse manifestations, comfortable to the users, sympathetic to space and purpose and place specific. Most of the chairs in public places are usually armless to cater for many people. We may also want to realize that even the car seats we normally use are manifestations of armless chairs.
